Auckland Eats - Next Door

A few weeks  ago Friday breakfast found us in Mt Eden at Next Door. It's retro decor had been tempting me for quite some time. I drive past it almost every day en route to the gym and it is one of those little places that always caught my eye and a mental note was made to visit it.  So with it being my turn to pick the venue for Friday breakfast it made it to the top of the list for my breakfast buddy and me.

The decor is indeed retro with a little Kiwiana thrown in.  A little art deco looking from the outside, mint green walls on the inside.  The table numbers are old 7" vinyl singles and lace doilies and more records contribute to the art work on the walls. One corner is even set up like an old fashioned living room, complete with an ancient TV set.

First things first,,,coffee.  Caffe L'affare coffee, so a good strong black coffee to kick the morning off, as it should be.

All the usual fare makes an appearance on the menu plus a few more.  For my breakfast buddy a bacon, egg and cheese muffin.  A little retro, in line with the decor and it went down a treat. Bacon, fried egg and melted cheese, you could even top with a dollop of HP sauce. For me it was the salmon hash cakes with a poached egg and chipotle mayonnaise.  They really did have me at chipotle mayonnaise.  smoked salmon hash cakes were delicious.  Wonderfully golden and crispy on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside, topped with a perfectly poached egg and the smokey chipotle mayo on the side. The mayo....ambrosial.  I could eat a bucket of the stuff.  The only thing I would have preferred would have been some grainier bread.

Service was OK, however sitting by the window, sun streaming in, strong coffee, the salmon hash cakes and that chipotle mayo more than made up for it.   So I think I can be quite certain that I will be back for more.

  1. Love the decor, places like this are really fun, although I would never go out to eat eggs and toasts (unless I am traveling and I am really starving :-) do they have any pastries that are good with coffee?

    Ciao

  6. Next Door is such a cute name for a cafe. I haven't noticed this place yet…even though I live and work in Mt Eden. Must pay more attention! I'm a sucker for smoked salmon and that would be what I would order too.
